Advice for new grad students on forming committees and students changing labs

New Graduate Committees

Other than doing your research, your committee is the most important aspect to your success in grad school. These are the individuals who will decide if you get your degree or not. When forming your committee there are a few things you should take note of:

  1. Consult with your PI about which professors would give the most feedback/help towards your project.

  2. Choose professors who all can contribute to different aspects of your research.

  3. Each committee needs a grad college representative, choose one that will help and not just sit in your meetings.

  4. Be respectful of their time when asking them to be on your committee. Remember, they are on several committees.

  5. Fill out the new committee form and get all the signatures necessary.

Changing Graduate Committees

In the event that you want to change labs and/or committees, you will need to fill out a new graduate committee form.

ABOUT US >

BIOS is the association of biology graduate students at UNLV. This organization was formed in the fall of 2001 to better represent the interests of the biology department's graduate students both within the department and campuswide. Members of our organization sit on many important departmental committees as well as the university's graduate student association.

Our four primary goals are:

  • To provide a strong bridge between the faculty and graduate students

  • To raise travel money to be awarded within the department.

  • To act as a sound board for fellow students to generate new ideas.

  • To be involved in and improve our community and local schools.
